What do you need to rent a car in Croatia?

Requirements for renting and picking up a car in Croatia are not complicated and you must present these documents:

  • drivers license
  • credit or debit card
  • passport or identity card
  • reservation/voucher number

In order to rent a car in Croatia, you need to be at least 18 years of age (this requirement may differ depending on the car type) and possess a valid driving license.

As the rental price includes the buy-back of part of liability for participation in damage (CDW) and vehicle theft protection (TP), an AUTOWILL car rental employee will ask you if you want additional protection packages. You will receive a Rental Agreement to read and sign. It highlights all the important costs, as well as the protection packages you have chosen.

What's the minimum age to rent a car 

The minimum age requirement for renting a car in Croatia in Autowill is 18 and the maximum age is 80. Generally, most companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old and to have held a valid driver's license for one to two years. Autowill car rent allows drivers who are 18 to 20 years old to rent a car but charge higher fees and requires additional coverage. The same applies for drivers above 70 years old. 

Can tourists rent a car in Croatia?

Autowill rental in Croatia offers one-way rentals and it's quite popular for tourists to travel between Zagreb, Split, Pula, Zadar, and Dubrovnik or other popular destinations with a hired car, picking up the car in one location and dropping it off in another. It is also possible to pick up and drop off a car at many other locations such as international hotels, car rental company offices, and train stations.

How much is the deposit to rent a car?

The deposit serves as a guarantee of the rental payment and possible additional costs that may occur during the rental period (potencial delays, lack of fuel, damage to the vehicle that are not covered by protection packages, traffic violations, fines, etc.

If you use a credit card for the deposit, an authorization of funds (deposit) will be made and knowledge of the PIN is required.

If you use a debit card for the deposit, the purchase of the L protection package is mandatory.

Upon the return of the vehicle, the deposit will be unblocked (please note that the autorization may take 4-6 weeks).
